May 24, 2011 (GLENDALE HEIGHTS, Ill.) (WLS) — Doctors in the western suburbs are giving free and discounted physicals to children who want to play sports.
Students were examined at a clinic at Glenside Middle School in Glendale Heights.
It’s all part of the “All Kids Play” program. Young athletes got check-ups that would allow them to participate in after-school sports. Doctors screened them for underlying heart issues that could be dangerous for active kids.
“There are of course a few rare cases where even a regular exam won’t pick up those potential problems. But in a lot of cases you can,” said Dr. Jared Wojnicki, Lombard Immediate Care Center. “So it’s a very important thing to do and it doesn’t cost you a lot of time or a lot of money.”
Some parents paid $25 for the exam.
Students who qualified for the Illinois “All Kids” insurance program got their check up for free.
